Warriors: From Rock Bottom to Stardom

Today, they are multi-time champions, but the Warriors have endured tough times in the NBA; see the franchise’s history

When we talk about the history of the Golden State Warriors, it’s impossible not to mention the transformation of a franchise that spent decades in the NBA’s doldrums before becoming one of the greatest dynasties basketball has ever seen. Founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, the team moved to California in 1962, adopting the name Golden State Warriors in 1971. However, it was in the last decade that the Warriors truly etched their name in the history books in an unforgettable way.

In the 1970s, they were a respectable team but often lived in the shadow of more traditional franchises. The 1975 championship, led by Rick Barry, was an impressive achievement but was followed by long years of mediocrity and inconsistency. Decades later, a light at the end of the tunnel began to shine with the arrival of a trio that would change the NBA forever: Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

The 2014-15 season marked the beginning of the golden era. Under head coach Steve Kerr, who implemented a style of play based on constant movement and quick shooting, the team won their first title in 40 years, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. This was the first of many epic battles between the Warriors and LeBron James’ team.

But it was during the 2015-16 season that the Warriors did something truly historic. They broke the record for most wins in a single season, achieving 73 victories and only 9 losses, surpassing the previous mark set by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. Although they lost the Finals that year to the Cavaliers in a dramatic fashion, their campaign solidified their place in the NBA’s elite.

The following year brought an addition that shook the league: Kevin Durant. Already considered one of the best players in the world, Durant joined the Warriors, forming an almost unbeatable super team. Over the next two years, the team dominated the league, winning the 2017 and 2018 titles with authority. Durant was named Finals MVP in both instances, and the Warriors were officially a dynasty.

The 2019 season, however, was marked by challenges. Injuries struck the team at the worst possible time, with Durant and Thompson sidelined in the Finals, and the Warriors were defeated by the Toronto Raptors. But, like every great story, the Golden State team´s journey was far from over.

After a period of rebuilding and new additions, like Andrew Wiggins and the emergence of young talent Jordan Poole, the Warriors were reborn in 2022. Led by a rejuvenated Stephen Curry, they secured another championship, reaffirming their status as one of the greatest franchises in NBA history.

The Golden State Warriors are not just a basketball team; they are an institution that changed the game and left a legacy that will be remembered for generations. From their humble roots to the era of the “Splash Brothers” and their dominant dynasty, the Warriors embody excellence, innovation, and perseverance in sports. And the future? Well, if the past has taught us anything, it’s that we should never underestimate the heart of a champion.
