Liverpool Football Club is one of the giants of world football, a team that, throughout its history, has built a deep bond with its supporters, collected trophies, and overcome moments of extreme adversity. Founded in 1892, in the heart of Liverpool, the club is synonymous with passion, success, and resilience. With their iconic red shirts and the mythical Anfield as their fortress, Liverpool transcended football to become one of the most respected sports institutions in the world.
Liverpool’s story begins with a disagreement. In 1892, Everton, who had been playing at Anfield, had a falling out with the stadium owner, John Houlding, over financial issues. Everton decided to move to Goodison Park, leaving Houlding without a team for Anfield. Faced with this situation, Houlding founded his own club—Liverpool FC—which initially wore blue and white, and entered the Football League in 1893.
In its early years, the club started to make a name for itself in English football. They won their first First Division title in 1901, repeating the feat in 1906. Although this early success hinted at what was to come, the club was still far from becoming the global powerhouse it would evolve into during the 20th century.
Liverpool continued to grow slowly, alternating between moments of success and periods of stagnation over the following decades. In the first half of the 20th century, the Reds won several league titles, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that a crucial shift took place. This change came when Bill Shankly took over as manager in 1959, completely transforming the club and laying the groundwork for one of football’s greatest dynasties.
Shankly didn’t just bring new tactical ideas, he also created a unique bond between the team, the club, and its fans. His work went beyond the pitch; he modernized the facilities and introduced a winning mentality, creating the famous “boot room” where coaches and players discussed tactics and strategies. In 1962, Shankly guided the club back to the First Division, and in 1964, they won their first league title in 17 years.
Under Shankly and later Bob Paisley, Liverpool became the dominant force in English and European football. The 1970s and 1980s were undoubtedly the club’s golden decades. Liverpool won their first European Cup in 1977, defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1, with goals from Terry McDermott, Tommy Smith, and Phil Neal. This was the beginning of a European dominance that saw Liverpool win three more European Cups in the following years. Bob Paisley, who succeeded Shankly, became the club’s most successful manager, winning six league titles and three European Cups.
During this era, legendary players like Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, and Ian Rush emerged as club icons. Liverpool’s playing style was a mix of organized, yet aggressive football, with a solid defense and a ruthless attack. During this period, Liverpool was not just a dominant team; they were a winning machine that commanded respect at every stadium around the world.
Despite all the success on the pitch, Liverpool’s history was also marred by tragedy. The first disaster occurred at Heysel in 1985, during the European Cup final against Juventus. A fight between fans led to the collapse of a wall in the stadium, resulting in the deaths of 39 people, most of them Juventus supporters. As a consequence, English clubs were banned from European competitions for five years, and Liverpool for six.
Four years later, in 1989, the club faced yet another tragedy, this time on home soil. In the Hillsborough disaster, during an FA Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest, 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives due to overcrowding and a catastrophic failure in crowd management. The impact of this disaster was devastating for the club and the city of Liverpool. For years, fans and the families of the victims fought for justice, and only decades later was the truth about Hillsborough officially acknowledged by authorities.
After their peak in the 70s and 80s, Liverpool entered a long period of stagnation. Throughout most of the 90s and 2000s, the club struggled to return to the top of English football. Though they won minor titles, like the UEFA Cup in 2001 and the FA Cup, Liverpool couldn’t replicate their former dominance. The lack of a Premier League title, which had been established in 1992, became a stain on the club’s recent history.
However, Liverpool’s fighting spirit never faded. In 2005, they produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history. In the Champions League final in Istanbul, Liverpool trailed 3-0 to AC Milan at halftime. In the second half, in an epic turnaround, the team equalized 3-3 and won on penalties, securing their fifth European Cup. Captain Steven Gerrard, who led the team’s resurgence, became a symbol of Liverpool’s heart and soul. “We never give up, that’s the Liverpool spirit,” Gerrard said after the game.
In 2015, Liverpool found the man to lead them back to glory: Jürgen Klopp. With his energetic, charismatic approach, and focus on “heavy metal football,” Klopp quickly won over the fans. He built a team based on intensity, high pressing, and speed, characteristics that resurrected Liverpool as one of the most feared forces in Europe.
In 2019, Klopp guided Liverpool to their sixth European Cup, defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the final. But the biggest prize was yet to come. In 2020, Liverpool finally ended their 30-year wait for a domestic league title, winning the Premier League. With a team led by stars like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson Becker, Liverpool dominated English football in a manner reminiscent of their past glories.
